Disability Awareness and Education

A Touch of Understanding is a local organization with a mission to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals and to minimize the discrimination, bullying, and misunderstanding experienced by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially for those with disabilities.  Join their team of volunteer instructors who travel to schools across the county, bringing a hands-on disability-awareness program to students.

Volunteers are needed on a regular basis on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays; the time of day is flexible according to the presentations scheduled, but the commitment is 3 hours once per week or per month.  Volunteers assist local elementary and high school students with program activities that educate and provide tools for conversation and understanding.




CalFresh Information Booths

Alchemist CDC is an organization that manages the CalFresh food assistance booths at farmers markets in the Sacramento area.  They are in need ov volunteers to help staff booths in 2-3 hour shifts, processing EBT transactions, distributing scrip and collecting scrip from farmers/vendors.  Farmers market locations and dates vary, please sign up below if you are intersted in hearing of markets in your area.




Help in the American Heart Association office!

The American Heart Association is looking for a reliable and consistent volunteer to help in the office 2 days a week for 4 hours each day. This volunteer must be age 16+ and have a professional attitude, as they will be attending to visitors, answering the phone, assisting with inquiries, and helping with other clerical work as needed.

Solar Panel Installation

GRID Alternatives is a non-profit that installs solar paneling for low-income home-owners and non-profits who have qualifying buildings FREE of cost!  Volunteers are not required to have previous experience, but are required to attend a short orientation as a way to recieve technical training on solar installation (Age 18+). Installs are 8 hours lead by a licensed solar installer, and after doing orientation a volunteer can sign up to join an install as often or as infrequently as they desire, Monday-Friday all around the Sacramento region.  A certification is also available, ask for further details!

Food Delivery Assistance

River City Food Bank needs a volunteer to join their delivery driver while he picks up donations from local grocery stores each morning.  Sign up for any day Monday-Friday from 7am-11am.  Available for 1-time or for recurring help.  Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.

Most Important Meals for Seniors (MIMs)

While most of the community is able to receive their food distribution at the food bank itself, many senior citizens who are food insecure are not able to transport themselves to the facility.  "MIMS" or "Most Important Meals for Seniors" are packed every Tuesday 3pm - 5pm and delivered to homes later during the week.  This would be for individual volunteers or groups of up to 5 people.  One-time or regular assistance needed.

River City Food Bank needs help sending thank yous and updating social media 1-2 times a week.  This volunteer work can be done from home!




Youth Program Volunteers

Roseville Police Activities League (RPAL) is a youth-mentoring and community outreach program that provides safe and supervised environments for recreational, athletic, social, educational, and cultural activities.  Volunteers are needed 1-2 days/week for approximately 2 hours, according to volunteer scheduling needs.  Come offer homework help, teach kids crafts or other skills, and otherwise invest your time in our local youth!




K-3 Literacy Helpers

The Sacramento Chinese Community Center holds an after school program in Elk Grove and is looking for literacy helpers for students K-3rd grade.  Volunteers help 2-4 hours each week, and commit to serving the entire 9 month school year.

Purchase supplies and wrap birthday boxes for local foster youth!  While every child has a birthday, not every child has an opportunity to celebrate; foster children often have birthdays forgotton, or providing a party is a burden on caregives.  Something as simple as a birthday party can bring joy and hope to a foster child -- and you can help!  Businesses can run a drive for birthday party supplies and/or pack and wrap boxes that will be delivered to foster children to make them feel special and cared for.

Seniors First Cafe - Meals for the Elderly

An important component of Seniors First's Senior Nutrition Program is Senior Cafes, neighborhood sites that offer hot meals and companionship five days a week. Besides the nutritional value in each meal, the Cafes also provide socialization for its guests; with many living alone and at risk of isolation, a visit to the cafe may be their only interaction throughout the day. Volunteers are needed to assist guests with small tasks and to spend time with them (no food prep or cooking necessary). Monday-Friday 10:30-1:30, as often as a volunteer is willing and available.

American River Headwaters Restoration (Overnight Project)

This is a very special project for a group of up to 15 volunteers.  The American River Headwaters is maintained by the American River Conservancy, and needs a group to come on a two-day overnight trip dedicated to trail clean-up and restoration, trail brushing and weed removal, stream restoration, and aquatic habitat enhancement.  Training will be provided, and the date is flexible between July and October.

About 2 hours from Coloma, CA in the high country near French Meadows Reservoir.

Sight Word Busters

Our volunteers work one hour weekly in local elementary schools assisting students with early literacy skills. Walk for Wishes

Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of every child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Walk for Wishes is their annual 1K/5K community walk/run to fundraise for their cause! Many current and past Wish Kids come out to participate, paying it forward and sharing the magic they have experienced with others. Food Box Packin' Tuesday at Salvation Army

Food boxes are packed every other Tuesday (9:30am - 12:30pm) to be ready for year-round distribution to those in need. Boxes are packed using an assembly line to place cans and other non-perishables in boxes weighing 25-30 pounds; most lifting is limited to a single food item. Volunteers help with sorting, taping boxes, filling, some lifting, and box break-down for recycling. Perfect for businesses, service groups, youth groups, etc., All volunteers are welcome to stay for lunch.

Bag Drop for Community Food Drive

The Auburn Interfaith Food Closet is partnering with the Salvation Army to address the hunger needs of the Auburn community. Did you know there are 5,000 individuals who live in zip codes 95602 and 95603 who live at or below the federal poverty level? Volunteer as an individual or as part of a team of 3-6 people who will be assigned a route around Auburn to drop off empty bags. Empty bags will explain the program and request households to fill them, and will be picked up the following week by a separate group of volunteers. Their goal is to have 5000 homes participate!

Spark interest in science at a Family Science Night!

Volunteer to help develop the youth of Sacramento into problem solvers with Sierra Nevada Journeys, a non-profit that delivers innovative outdoor science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and inspire natural resource stewardship. Volunteer to help at a Family Science Night of them from 5pm - 7pm; no training or expertise is required! Volunteers run science stations utilizing easy-to-follow curriculum that is provided. Age 11+. This is a great opportunity for future educators, teens looking for service hours, and anybody with interest in science!

Home Improvements for a Disabled Veteran

Rebuilding Together Sacramento transforms the lives of low-income homeowners by improving the safety & health of their homes while revitalizing their communities. This project will be completed at the home of a disabled veteran and his wife, who are both seniors who have survived cancer, and need assistance with repairs and increasing accessibility to their home. Any skill level welcome, fencing and other construction skills highly desired. Building a wheelchair ramp, yard clean-up, fence repair, removal of an above-ground pool, and garage repair will all be part of the project. Lunch Saturday 12-1.

Volunteers must be age 16+, and be accompanied by adult if under 18.

Bag Pick Up for Community Food Drive

The Auburn Interfaith Food Closet is partnering with the Salvation Army to address the hunger needs of the Auburn community. Did you know there are 5,000 individuals who live in zip codes 95602 and 95603 who live at or below the federal poverty level? Volunteer as an individual or as part of a team of 3-6 people who will be assigned a route around Auburn to pick up bags that households have filled with food for the needy. Their goal is to have 5000 homes participate!
