Disability Awareness and Education

A Touch of Understanding is a local organization with a mission to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals and to minimize the discrimination, bullying, and misunderstanding experienced by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially for those with disabilities.  Join their team of volunteer instructors who travel to schools across the county, bringing a hands-on disability-awareness program to students.

Volunteers are needed on a regular basis on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays; the time of day is flexible according to the presentations scheduled, but the commitment is 3 hours once per week or per month.  Volunteers assist local elementary and high school students with program activities that educate and provide tools for conversation and understanding.

Solar Panel Installation

GRID Alternatives is a non-profit that installs solar paneling for low-income home-owners and non-profits who have qualifying buildings FREE of cost!  Volunteers are not required to have previous experience, but are required to attend a short orientation as a way to recieve technical training on solar installation (Age 18+). Installs are 8 hours lead by a licensed solar installer, and after doing orientation a volunteer can sign up to join an install as often or as infrequently as they desire, Monday-Friday all around the Sacramento region.  A certification is also available, ask for further details!




Lead Students in Financial Literacy & Work Readiness

Junior Achievement of Sacramento (JA) is dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures, and make smart academic and economic choices. Ongoing volunteers are needed to lead students in fun, hands-on activities for 30-45 minutes once per week for 5-7 weeks. Volunteers attend a 1 hour training, then are paired with a class (according to a volunteers' location, age, and time preferences) to inspire and empower youth with financial and career skills! Volunteers must be age 18+ (16 with a parent).

The Lighthouse Family Resource Center needs painting!

Lincoln's Lighthouse Family Resource Center works to strengthen families and improve the well-being of residents of Placer County by providing counseling, education, and easy access to community based resources. Repair an Old Schoolhouse!

The Long Valley Community Hall was originally built as a one-room school house in Newcastle, CA, just outside of Auburn. Years ago it fell into an unfortunate state of disrepair, but a community group came together to form a non-profit in 2010 and have been steadily been making repairs. Now a usable building available for community events, wedding receptions, and group meetings, they still have more work to do. This is a perfect project, with a wide range of tasks to choose from, including painting and more specialized demolition projects.

Nature Center Docent

The Placer Nature Center shares a 60-acre site with the California Conservation Corps, with the mission to deliver community-based, volunteer-supported environmental education programs to children, families, schools, and community groups.  This organization is dedicated to serving the residents of Placer and Nevada Counties, and depends entirely on volunteer support.  Docents are needed during the weekdays as well as on Saturdays to offer information regarding the center and environment, host birthday parties, lead hikes, deliever curriculum to school groups, etc.,  Sign up to learn more about scheduling!

Be a "buddy" for youth soccer players with special needs!

Middle & High School students can volunteer to be "buddies" with Placer Youth Soccer League's TOP Soccer program for young athletes with special needs. TOP Soccer provides a safe and active environment for players who are challenged by the demands of traditional soccer while offering an enriching experience for youth volunteers. Food Delivery Assistance

River City Food Bank needs a volunteer to join their delivery driver while he picks up donations from local grocery stores each morning.  Sign up for any day Monday-Friday from 7am-11am.  Available for 1-time or for recurring help.  Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.

River City Food Bank hosts 4-week cooking classes regularly to teach the community about how to prepare nutritious meals.  They need knowledgeable volunteers to help (schedule is flexible), commitment is to 4 2-hour classes.




Most Important Meals for Seniors (MIMs)

While most of the community is able to receive their food distribution at the food bank itself, many senior citizens who are food insecure are not able to transport themselves to the facility.  "MIMS" or "Most Important Meals for Seniors" are packed every Tuesday 3pm - 5pm and delivered to homes later during the week.  This would be for individual volunteers or groups of up to 5 people.  One-time or regular assistance needed.




Youth Program Volunteers

Roseville Police Activities League (RPAL) is a youth-mentoring and community outreach program that provides safe and supervised environments for recreational, athletic, social, educational, and cultural activities.  Volunteers are needed 1-2 days/week for approximately 2 hours, according to volunteer scheduling needs.  Come offer homework help, teach kids crafts or other skills, and otherwise invest your time in our local youth!




Inspire children to live healthy lives as a Rhett Rep!

Runnin' for Rhett is a non-profit dedicated to nurturing healthy communities through fitness and nutrition. Rhett Reps help with their 7-week Youth Fitness Program, which runs in 80 schools in Sacramento and culminate with the Run Because You Can 5K in April. Beginning the week of March 12, Rhett Reps volunteer after school for 2 hours/week, helping the coaches and cheering on students. Reps don't need to be runners to help, only enthusiasm and encouragement to help students succeed during their training. Volunteer trainings will be held on 2/26 and 2/27. Once signed up, volunteers will select a school in their preferred area on day(s) that work into their schedule.




K-3 Literacy Helpers

The Sacramento Chinese Community Center holds an after school program in Elk Grove and is looking for literacy helpers for students K-3rd grade.  Volunteers help 2-4 hours each week, and commit to serving the entire 9 month school year.

Harvest Local Fruit!

Soil Born Farms is actively engaged in our community to prevent food waste and sustain local fruits. Households across the region have fruit trees growing in their yards, with too much fruit for them to use. Soil Born Farms connects with these households and sends volunteers into the community to harvest fruit, and you can help! All materials are provided to volunteers, who will be assisted by a harvest leader, all they need is transportation. Seniors First Cafe - Meals for the Elderly

An important component of Seniors First's Senior Nutrition Program is Senior Cafes, neighborhood sites that offer hot meals and companionship five days a week. Besides the nutritional value in each meal, the Cafes also provide socialization for its guests; with many living alone and at risk of isolation, a visit to the cafe may be their only interaction throughout the day. Volunteers are needed to assist guests with small tasks and to spend time with them (no food prep or cooking necessary). Monday-Friday 10:30-1:30, as often as a volunteer is willing and available.

American River Headwaters Restoration (Overnight Project)

This is a very special project for a group of up to 15 volunteers.  The American River Headwaters is maintained by the American River Conservancy, and needs a group to come on a two-day overnight trip dedicated to trail clean-up and restoration, trail brushing and weed removal, stream restoration, and aquatic habitat enhancement.  Training will be provided, and the date is flexible between July and October.

About 2 hours from Coloma, CA in the high country near French Meadows Reservoir.

Gathering In Style is looking for Volunteer Day Managers at their thrift shop to benefit the homeless.  This is an ongoing volunteer commitment for individuals to sign up for a day of the week and a shift (9:45am-2:00pm and 1:30pm-5:30pm are the options) that they would fulfill each week. The day manager will look over the register and direct the volunteers for their shifts. 




Sight Word Busters

Our volunteers work one hour weekly in local elementary schools assisting students with early literacy skills. We provide volunteer training, volunteer support, and placement.  Assignments are flexible and substitutes are available, shifts are about one hour long. KidsFirst offers the Forever Father curriculum in order to strengthen families and build strong male role models in the home. At "JA In A Day" events, volunteers lead students through fun, hands-on activities 5-7 lessons back-to-back to fill a school day with information on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Volunteers must be age 18+ (16 with a parent), and must sign up two weeks in advance.

Help with Childcare while Parents Attend Parenting Classes

KidsFirst offers parenting classes in order to strengthen families in Placer County. Volunteers are needed to assist with childcare (children ages 1-8) so that parents are able to attend, and may assist just once or on a continual basis for the duration of the course. Volunteers must be age 13+ (under 16 must be accompanied by a parent volunteer).

Bite of Reality (financial simulation)

CELI, Inc. is an organization dedicated to providing adults and teens with real-world job-readiness skills through training and resources. Join them for this year's "Bite of Reality" event, a hands-on simulation where participants face the realities of independent financial living. Teens and adults are given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse, family, debt, etc., and walk between table stations to purchase housing, transportation, food, and other necessities. Volunteers will work at these table stations, attempting to "upsale" the items, simulating social pressures that are a large part of financial decision making. Volunteers must be age 18+

Mercy Multiplied is a nonprofit Christian organization dedicated to helping young women break free from life-controlling behaviors and situations, including eating disorders, self-harm, drug and alcohol addictions, unplanned pregnancy, depression, sexual abuse, and sex trafficking. They are hosting a luncheon and need assistance in the kitchen. Citrus Fruit Harvest & Fruit Tree Work Party

Join Soil Born Farms for their citrus harvest and fruit tree work party! Volunteers will be assigned to one of two activities: harvesting fruit in local neighborhoods or potting fruit trees for the Soil Born nursery. For harvesting, volunteers will be in groups of 10, lead by a harvest leader; each group will be assigned 3-5 sites to visit and harvest fruit. All materials will be provided, but volunteers must have their own transportation (trucks or SUVs preferred, so that they can help move tools if necessary). Children ages 3-15 are welcome with parental supervision, and will be given simple sorting tasks. Age 15-17 welcome with signed waiver. Lunch will be provided after harvesting is finished!

Clean Up the American River!

The American River Parkway Foundation's Sustainable Saturday program is tackling the Northgate River Access Site. This is a high-use site, heavily impacted by camping and at potential risk for flooding. Join the Roseville Fire Fighters Association at their 20th annual crab feed as a volunteer! Proceeds of the event will benefit KidsFirst and Lighthouse Counseling & Family Resource Center, nonprofits working to prevent child abuse and empower healthy families in Placer County. 2018 Crab Feed for Sacramento Children's Home

The Sacramento Children's Home runs a multitude of programs throughout Sacramento to support families and children. From family resource centers to emergency childcare, SCH has been helping children in Sacramento for 150 years. Their annual Crab Feed has been a wonderful way for the community to support this organization over the years, and each year is a success because of the volunteers who donate their time.
