Disability Awareness and Education

A Touch of Understanding is a local organization with a mission to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals and to minimize the discrimination, bullying, and misunderstanding experienced by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially for those with disabilities.  Join their team of volunteer instructors who travel to schools across the county, bringing a hands-on disability-awareness program to students.

Volunteers are needed on a regular basis on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays; the time of day is flexible according to the presentations scheduled, but the commitment is 3 hours once per week or per month.  Volunteers assist local elementary and high school students with program activities that educate and provide tools for conversation and understanding.

CalFresh Information Booths

Alchemist CDC is an organization that manages the CalFresh food assistance booths at farmers markets in the Sacramento area.  They are in need ov volunteers to help staff booths in 2-3 hour shifts, processing EBT transactions, distributing scrip and collecting scrip from farmers/vendors.  Farmers market locations and dates vary, please sign up below if you are intersted in hearing of markets in your area.

Wildlife Rescue Center - Various Duties

Gold Country Wildlife Rescue is a non-profit, volunteer organization, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife.  Each year their trained volunteers help thousands of injured birds and mammals return to the wild.  This organization has many volunteer opportunities available for animal lovers: front desk assistance, animal care, animal transportation, emergency animal rescue, educational outreach in schools, and special events.  Sign up to learn how you can support this organization!

Solar Panel Installation

GRID Alternatives is a non-profit that installs solar paneling for low-income home-owners and non-profits who have qualifying buildings FREE of cost!  Volunteers are not required to have previous experience, but are required to attend a short orientation as a way to recieve technical training on solar installation (Age 18+). Installs are 8 hours lead by a licensed solar installer, and after doing orientation a volunteer can sign up to join an install as often or as infrequently as they desire, Monday-Friday all around the Sacramento region.  A certification is also available, ask for further details!

Nature Center Docent

The Placer Nature Center shares a 60-acre site with the California Conservation Corps, with the mission to deliver community-based, volunteer-supported environmental education programs to children, families, schools, and community groups.  This organization is dedicated to serving the residents of Placer and Nevada Counties, and depends entirely on volunteer support.  Docents are needed during the weekdays as well as on Saturdays to offer information regarding the center and environment, host birthday parties, lead hikes, deliever curriculum to school groups, etc.,  Sign up to learn more about scheduling!

Food Delivery Assistance

River City Food Bank needs a volunteer to join their delivery driver while he picks up donations from local grocery stores each morning.  Sign up for any day Monday-Friday from 7am-11am.  Available for 1-time or for recurring help.  Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.

Food Distribution at River City Food Bank

River City Food Bank serves over 80,000 families each year, providing food for those in need.  Every afternoon, their center hosts general distributions of food to the community between 11am - 3pm.   Individual volunteers are welcome, or groups of up to 15 volunteers to volunteer once or to assisst regularly with distribution.

Help in a cooking class!

River City Food Bank hosts 4-week cooking classes regularly to teach the community about how to prepare nutritious meals.  They need knowledgeable volunteers to help (schedule is flexible), commitment is to 4 2-hour classes.

Most Important Meals for Seniors (MIMs)

While most of the community is able to receive their food distribution at the food bank itself, many senior citizens who are food insecure are not able to transport themselves to the facility.  "MIMS" or "Most Important Meals for Seniors" are packed every Tuesday 3pm - 5pm and delivered to homes later during the week.  This would be for individual volunteers or groups of up to 5 people.  One-time or regular assistance needed.

Social Media and Administrative Help

River City Food Bank needs help sending thank yous and updating social media 1-2 times a week.  This volunteer work can be done from home!

Youth Program Volunteers

Roseville Police Activities League (RPAL) is a youth-mentoring and community outreach program that provides safe and supervised environments for recreational, athletic, social, educational, and cultural activities.  Volunteers are needed 1-2 days/week for approximately 2 hours, according to volunteer scheduling needs.  Come offer homework help, teach kids crafts or other skills, and otherwise invest your time in our local youth!

K-3 Literacy Helpers

The Sacramento Chinese Community Center holds an after school program in Elk Grove and is looking for literacy helpers for students K-3rd grade.  Volunteers help 2-4 hours each week, and commit to serving the entire 9 month school year.

Food box packing at Salvation Army

Food boxes are packed every other Tuesday (9:30am - 12:30pm) to be ready for year-round distribution to those in need.  Boxes are packed using an assembly line to place cans and other non-perishables in boxes weighing 25-30 pounds; most lifting is limited to a single food item.  Volunteers help with sorting, taping boxes, filling, some lifting, and box break-down for recycling.  Perfect for businesses, service groups, youth groups, etc., All volunteers are welcome to stay for lunch.

Minimum age of 16+ or 18+, location depending.

With the high demand of food assistance, the Salvation Army needs volunteers to help distibute food to those in need.    Volunteers must wear closed toed, rubber soled shoes.  No flip-flops or sandals.  Minimum age:  18 years. 

Shifts available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Choose from morning shift 9am-12pm or afternoon shift 12pm-3pm.

Seniors First Cafe - Meals for the Elderly

An important component of Seniors First's Senior Nutrition Program is Senior Cafes, neighborhood sites that offer hot meals and companionship five days a week. Besides the nutritional value in each meal, the Cafes also provide socialization for its guests; with many living alone and at risk of isolation, a visit to the cafe may be their only interaction throughout the day. Volunteers are needed to assist guests with small tasks and to spend time with them (no food prep or cooking necessary). Monday-Friday 10:30-1:30, as often as a volunteer is willing and available.

Volunteer Day Manager

Gathering In Style is looking for Volunteer Day Managers at their thrift shop to benefit the homeless.  This is an ongoing volunteer commitment for individuals to sign up for a day of the week and a shift (9:45am-2:00pm and 1:30pm-5:30pm are the options) that they would fulfill each week. The day manager will look over the register and direct the volunteers for their shifts. 

Sight Word Busters

Our volunteers work one hour weekly in local elementary schools assisting students with early literacy skills. We provide volunteer training, volunteer support, and placement.  Assignments are flexible and substitutes are available, shifts are about one hour long. We currently serve schools in Auburn, Lincoln, Meadow Vista,Newcastle, Rocklin, and Roseville.

Arena Assistance

Horses for Healing operates a ranch that offers therapeutic riding for children and adults with special needs.  They need help on Tuesdays from 2pm-5pm and Fridays from 9am-12pm.  Help to set up the arena with games and activities, or be a "side-walker" who walks with the horse and client to offer support.  Sign up on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, whatever works best for you!  Ages 14+ only.

Make-A-Wish can always use volunteers during Wish Reveals!  This is a quick, exciting, and fun experience that is great for individuals or groups of any age.  Volunteers make signs and cheer for the children who are getting their wishes granted, and depending on the wish some set-up help may be needed.  Sign up below to be informed of when wish reveals coming up!
